I have yet to watch the Michael Jackson memorial, The BET awards and no, I did not put on a white glove red motorcycle jacket and dance like it’s nobody’s business in the middle of downtown Toronto at the tribute. I am sadden by the loss of Michael Jackson, yes, but I’m quickly coming to the point where I am unable to grieve because everywhere I turn I see the image of the undisputed King of Pop.
In his death we now get glimpse of the family, that he made an effort to so cautiously conceal from the public. We demand the show of a lifetime at the BET awards only 72 hours after his passing, tributes are set up in clubs, downtown cores of cities around the globe, and people have started rocking signature Michael attire, to show respect. I don’t have a problem with any of this, I don’t, but its so gawd damn overwhelming and I want to get on with this thing we call life, can we?
I instantly log on to my social media networking platforms, Facebook & Twitter and find that most people have switched up their avatars and profile pictures to images of MJ, posted MJ videos, written somewhat overly sentimental status updates about MJ, and this is now almost two weeks since his passing, and you know what? You didn’t know him personally; lets pay our respects and move on please!
I just feel that there are so many other very important causes that need the attention and energy that we put into sustaining the legacy of a dead man. Did you blink twice when you heard about 2-year old Jada Justice going missing? Or did you sign the petition for Troy Davis wrongly accused brother on death row? “It’s MJ C’mon!” For the last time R.I.P Michael, I love your music and I’m glad you can finally get some much-needed peace and quiet up in heaven.
