Belize (formerly British Honduras until the name of the country was changed in 1973) lies on the eastern or Caribbean coast of Central America, bounded on the north and part of the west by Mexico, and on the south and the remainder of the west by Guatemala. The inner coastal waters are shallow and are sheltered by a line of coral reefs, dotted with islets called ‘cayes’, extending almost the entire length of the country.

You can see Placencia from miles away when you come from single-engine plane. A half moon shaped silver sand sprinkled with palm trees that has a air strip that divides it from the southern Belize peninsula. There is only one road that that leads you through the town where you see a sign that tells the the cars to watch out for the planes landing.

At the Turtle Inn (www.blancaneaux.com for about$375 a night) which is one of Ford Coppola’s three Central American Resorts. You can find khaki beaches, crashing waves and the very important seaside bar. Enjoy a nice cold bottle of Belikins (the local beer) and you can eat pizza from the brick oven over at Mare. Chabil Mar Villas (www.chabilmarvillas.com from $385 a night) is a beach front hotel-condo with lush gardens. This is another place that you can just sit and relax and do absolutely nothing.  You can visit bars such as Tipsy Tuna and Cozy Corner you should enjoy that as long and reggae music and $2 rum punches can keep you entertained.

For great food you should head down to Yoli’s Bar and Grill where you can get a classic Belizean dinner ($5 for grilled ribs, rice and beans). If you want to take it a little more high end you can try out Rumfish y Vino, where the specialty is usually what is caught that morning. Whatever you choose at the end of the night make your way to Driftwood, located across the bay (the bar sends a skiff boat to pick you up). Since Placencia is surrounded by water you can have plenty adventures on land or by water.

The best thing you can do for $50 is take a snorkeling trip to many of the cayes (pronunced keys) in Belize’s barrier reef. Its about a half our ride from the coast and your hotel can give you the best recomendation of a tour operator. The waters of the keys are filled with dolphins, manatees, nurse sharks and even manta rays.
